Q: What population do you serve?

A: We serve adults with brain injuries, mental health conditions, chemical dependency, and other physical and neurological disabilities such as stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Asperger's, and autism.

Q: What payment methods do you accept?

A: We accept a wide variety of payment methods including, but not limited to, private pay and county waivers, such as CADI or TBI.

Q: Do you accept consumers from other counties?

A: Yes, we do accept consumers from other counties for all of our programs.

Q: What is the difference between Residential Support Services (Adult Foster Care) and Apartments with Services?

A: Residential Support Services is a home model for individuals that need 24-hour care. Apartments with Services is a home model for those individuals who need some supervision but do not require 24-hour care. ILS coaching is provided according to each person's needs, and 24-hour on call support is available.

Q: Does your staff have any specialized training?

A: All SMB Homes/The Next Step employees are required to complete specialized training. We provide our staff with monthly training opportunities that relate directly to their position and our consumers. This training may include, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Brain Injury
  • Mental Illness
  • Leadership Training
  • Behavioral Redirection and Coping Skills
  • Wellness Training
  • Professional Boundaries

Q: How often will we be informed of our family member's status and progress?

A: Each consumer and their team have different desires for the frequency of updates. This will be determined case by case based on the requirements of the consumer and their team.

Q: Can I bring my pet? Are there pets in the homes?

A: SMB Homes/The Next Step believes that animals are a great form of therapy, and you will find that some of our homes or apartments have a variety of animals which may include dogs, cats, or fish. We try to accommodate as many individuals' requests as possible with our pet friendly environment, but we also consider all other residents' desires, needs, and allergies. Please ask the Designated Manager about the pet policy for the home/program you are interested in.

Q: Are the bedrooms furnished in the Residential Support Services homes and/or Apartments with Services?

A: We can furnish the room if needed (bed, dresser, and nightstand), but you may also bring your own furniture.
